‘Statistics Day’ in India has been observed since 2007 on 29th June to mark the birth anniversary of Professor (Late) P. C. Mahalanobis, in recognisation of his contribution in the fields of Statistics and Economic Planning. This year at the instance of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India celebrated 29th June 2017 as 11th Statistics Day. The function is organized with an aim of creating public awareness especially among the younger generation for drawing inspiration from Late Professor P. C. Mahalanobis about the role of Statistics in socio-economic development planning and policy formulation. The theme of this year’s Statistics Day is ‘Administrative Statistics’.
The Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Assam celebrated the day in its Headquarter, Guwahati. The programme was inaugurated by lightening of Lamp and garlanding on portrait of Prof. Mahalanobis. Shri Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director of Economics and Statistics, Assam delivered the welcome address and explained briefly about the contribution of Prof P C Mahalanobis in the modern statistics and economic planning and also importance of statistics in socio-economic development in the State.
The Programme was attended by Prof. Labananda Choudhury, Department of Statistics, Gauhati University, Assam. In his speech Prof Choudhury mentioned in details about the importance and use of the Administrative Statistics, the theme of this Statistics Day. Sri Ajit Baruah, Joint Director of DES, Assam also gave a presentation on significance of Statistics Day and contribution of Prof. Mahalanobis in modern Statistics and Economic Planning.
